DESCRIPTION

This publication was created during the course “Introduction to Subject Didactics” winter semester 2024/25 by Eva Greisberger & Pia Scharler 1st Edition “How to Not Fuck Up Your School Happiness” is a continuously growing publication by you – for you. Focusing on the aspects of collaboration and diversity in art education, students developed a didactic landscape for art-based, practice-oriented subjects. This project took place during the winter semester 2024/25 under the guidance of Eva Greisberger and Pia Scharler, as part of the course “Einführung in die Fachdidaktik” (Introduction to Art Didactics). In doing so, students explored self-chosen topics and protagonists from art and design didactics and connected disciplines, aiming to discover and get to know the potential and diverse approaches these figures offer.  This didactic landscape has been transformed into a small publication that not only aims to provide an “in a nutshell” overview, but also reflects multiperspective approaches of its representatives and the wide range of possibilities within subject-specific teaching practices. “How to Not Fuck Up Your School Happiness” is meant to accompany you throughout your studies and later support you in schools and other educational contexts—always highlighting the richness and complexity of didactic practice.

The story follows him from the time shortly before his diagnosis to life with it. It deals with sleep problems, doctor's visits, and coping with the situation. It also depicts his daily life: jogging through the gardens of Schönbrunn Palace, playing table tennis and games on his laptop, weight training, regular meals, and plenty of humor. Andreas is a fun-loving and optimistic person. These aspects, and especially his passion for technology, are an important part of the story told in the graphic novel. In the graphic novel, Andreas becomes the inventor of a Story Preservation Station (SPS). As the name suggests, the SPS's goal is to preserve stories. The SPS is a combination of technical devices. When a story is preserved, it goes through five stages: audio recording, visualization, mixing, emotion extraction, and jam dispensing. The final product is memory jam, which is filled into jars like conventional jam and preserved using the special process mentioned above. The story is contained within the jam, or the jam is full of stories. The unique composition, the color of the jam, its consistency, its smell, its taste, the sound of opening the jar – all these can bring the story back to mind.

Intra-Actions: Existence is not an Individual Matter

The spatial installation "Intra-Actions: Existence is not an Individual Matter" at Palazzo Mora, Room #18, is the contribution of the Center for Didactics of Art and Interdisciplinary Education at the University of Applied Arts Vienna to the Venice Biennial 2022, curated by the European Cultural Center. The installation was developed collaboratively with staff, alumni, and students of the Center for Art Didactics and Interdisciplinary Education, staff of the Science Visualization Lab (Prof. Alfred Vendl), students of the Digital Art Department (Prof. Ruth Schnell), and alumni of the University of Applied Arts from various departments, as well as cooperation partners. As a quantum physicist, Barad raises interesting questions not only for physics, but also for art, design, technology. Her work engages with both the human and the non-human, including apparatuses of whatever kind. She considers things not in their singularity, but in their interdependence, and calls this method Intra-Actions. A multi-particle system of quantum physics – which as a whole assumes a well-defined state without being able to assign each of the subsystems their own state – is applied to humanity and expresses a new way of interpreting interdisciplinarity. Intra-Actions show the entanglement of people and nature, the material and the artificial. According to Barad, individuals do not exist prior to their interactions, but emerge through and as part of their intertwined internal relationships. Understanding this approach, it becomes clear that entangling with the Other describes the absence of one’s own existence, for existence is not an individual matter. The installation shows an ongoing approach towards the most diverse positions on the theme Time, Space and Existence. It expresses an Agential Realism, which stands for the growing awareness that we cannot separate culture, materiality, technology, nature, and existence. It consists of a burnt tree whose branches are connected via cables and whose only remaining leaves are screens. The screens show selected positions of artists’ works. The organic structure of the wood in connection with technology and digitalization is also metaphoric. In relation to the digital content shown on the screens, there are ongoing intra-actions between tree and screens. The space installation draws attention to both the interconnections of deforestation, climate change and the exploitation of energy resources, and to the importance of art in this context. Here, art, as a seismograph of society, implies the power of renewal. The installation would have initially been accompanied with a specially created scent reminiscent of smoke and burnt wood to echo the themes of deforestation and climate change, however, given current world events, it was decided to forgo this option in favour designing another, fresher fragrance, reinforcing instead humanity’s capacity for renewal, uplifting positivity, and hope for the future. And with pieces of coal provided for drawing on the walls, everyone can become involved. Realization: C. Gröbner, P. Scharler, M. Bachinger, R. Mateus-Berr, S. Bösker

Arts & Dementia - Interdisciplinary Perspectives

Dementia is a term that encompasses a wide range of symptoms. In Europe alone about 10 million people live with dementia. Where health policy and medical approaches reach their limits, art and design strategies can open up new perspectives for people living with dementia – in terms of their abilities and circumstances and their social environment. This interdisciplinary handbook is aimed at people working and researching in the field of dementia. It offers insights into the possibilities and limitations of artistic and art-related interventions in relation to dementia. This publication brings together contributions from the disciplines of design, architecture, and art, music, and museum education, providing a variety of insights into this multifaceted syndrome.
  • Interdisciplinary research on arts and dementia
  • New perspectives from social design, museum education, sound art, and architecture
  • Art and design interventions to improve individual situations and the way society deals with dementia

2016-2019 “Artistic Research on Patterns of Perception and Action in the Context of an Aging Society” Grant Funders: FWF Programm for Arts-based Research Time: 01.03.2016—28.03.2019 https://www.dementiaartssociety.com/ Project Partners: University of Applied Arts Vienna Project Lead: University of Applied Arts Vienna (Ruth Mateus-Berr) Projectdescription: Artistic Research on Patterns of Perception and Action in the Context of an Aging Society This project is about integrating the potentials of arts-based research into the ongoing efforts to meet the challenges which dementia brings to our societies. Some 10 Million people in Europe are suffering from dementia. By the year 2050 the number of people with dementia is estimated to double. People with dementia suffer from societal stigmatization. Common tasks like shopping, financial agendas and traveling to unknown places can be difficult for them. To avoid rejection and embarrassment they seclude themselves from society. The principle hypothesis of this research project is, that specifically created art and design interventions can change the societal approach to dementia and improve the individual situation of people with dementia and their caring persons. On the societal level this project aims to develop art-based processes for changing the sensory perception of persons without dementia and thereby raising the general societal awareness for the situation of people with dementia. On the individual level the project aims to develop concepts for artworks, design products, interactive creative social processes, performative interventions or other creative tools to increase the individual self-determination and selfconfidence of people. This should support people with dementia to remain an active part of society for a longer period of time. Spending some time with people suffering from dementia, dialogues and interviews with experts, workshops on design thinking, sensual workshops, narrative drawings, photographs, videos and public performances will be the methods applied. Where social politics, therapies, caregiving and medicine come to their end, arts- and designstrategies aim to open up new perspectives to people with dementia concerning their own capabilities and their situation within social environments. This is the particular approach to the challenges caused by dementia.
